Sterols 4. Hopanoids and Related Lipids

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Bacteria and other prokaryotic organisms such as blue-green algae do not in general contain any of the conventional sterols found in plants and animals, but rather many species have related molecules, i.e. pentacyclic triterpenoids, based on a hopane skeleton with a cyclopentane E-ring and termed ‘hopanoids’ (from the plant genus Hopea, from which they were isolated as components of the resin (dammar resin)). The more complex forms are sometimes termed ‘bacteriohopanepolyols’. They were first discovered in 1973 as the compounds responsible for the alignment of the cellulose microfibrils secreted by Acetobacter xylinum.

Functional convergence of hopanoids and sterols in membrane ordering.

Liquid-ordered phases are one of two biochemically active membrane states, which until now were thought to be a unique consequence of the interactions between eukaryotic membrane lipids. The formation of a liquid-ordered phase depends crucially on the ordering properties of sterols. However, it is not known whether this capacity exists in organisms that lack sterols, such as bacteria. We show t...

Hopanoids as functional analogues of cholesterol in bacterial membranes.

The functionality of cellular membranes relies on the molecular order imparted by lipids. In eukaryotes, sterols such as cholesterol modulate membrane order, yet they are not typically found in prokaryotes. The structurally similar bacterial hopanoids exhibit similar ordering properties as sterols in vitro, but their exact physiological role in living bacteria is relatively uncharted. We presen...

High hopanoid/total lipids ratio in Frankia mycelia is not related to the nitrogen status.

Vesicles are specific Frankia structures which are produced under nitrogen-limiting culture conditions. Hopanoids are the most abundant lipids in these vesicles and are believed to protect the nitrogenase against oxygen. The amounts and quality of each hopanoid were estimated in different Frankia strains cultivated under nitrogen-depleted and nitrogen-replete conditions in order to detect a pos...

Palaeochemistry and Biochemistry of a Group of Natural Products

More than 100 individual derivatives of hopane have been isolated from sedimentary organic matter of most varied origin. They are ubiquitous molecular fossils derived from cellular constituents of micro-organisms. Hopanoids are shown to be widely distributed among Bacteria and Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Their function in cells is probably equivalent to that of sterols in the eucaryote ce...

Trophic upgrading of picocyanobacterial carbon by ciliates for nutrition of Daphnia magna

Unicellular picocyanobacteria, such as species of the genus Synechococcus, are unsuitable for supporting growth and reproduction of Daphnia spp. In Synechococcus spp., long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and sterols are absent, which leads to a low carbon transfer efficiency at the picocyanobacteria–Daphnia spp. interface. Herein, we address the question as to whether ciliates can se...
